Cultivating Connection: How Financial Pathways Supports Mental Health and Well-Being at Work
As we wrap up National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, we’re proud to reflect on the strides we’ve made to strengthen workplace wellness through the leadership of Russell Dye, Director of Employee Experience, and our partnership with Shayla Herndon Edmunds of OMG Wellness, an organization that offers natural wellness products, massage, spiritual coaching, and wellness programming.
Building a Culture of Care
When Russell first stepped into his role in October of 2023, his mission was clear: to listen to employees and build a work environment that meets their real needs—both personal and professional. Through surveys, one-on-one conversations, and open dialogue, he discovered that supporting mental health wasn’t just an employee benefit; it was a necessity.“People need to know they matter as a whole person,” Russell shared. “When employees feel cared for beyond their job title, they show up more authentically and engage more fully.”
That philosophy led to several major initiatives, including the creation of our S.A.F.E. Space, a serene environment where staff can take a mindful break, reflect, or recharge. Opened this spring, the S.A.F.E. Space represents our commitment to cultivating peace and balance at work. From aromatherapy activities and chair massages to guided mindfulness sessions, these small moments of restoration make a big difference in employee well-being.
Partnering with Shayla: Centering Vulnerability and Belonging
Our partnership with Shayla Herndon Edmunds, founder of OMG Wellness, has been transformative in deepening these efforts. Shayla’s workshops help staff explore the connection between vulnerability, belonging, and mental health, reminding us that wellness begins with human connection.
In a recent webinar leading up to World Mental Health Day, Shayla encouraged staff to reflect on how they “show up” each day and to practice self-awareness through simple techniques like deep breathing. She reminded us that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s courage.
“Vulnerability is having the courage to show up when we can’t control the outcome,” Shayla explained. “It’s what helps us form connection and create belonging.”
Through her session, employees discussed the barriers that make vulnerability difficult—like fear of judgment or the pressure to appear perfect—and learned that true belonging happens when we feel safe to be our authentic selves.
“Belonging means knowing that my best on Monday might look different than my best on Wednesday,” Shayla said, “but both versions of me are enough," said Shayla.
The Ripple Effect of Wellness
Russell and Shayla’s collaboration has sparked a ripple effect across the organization. What began as a few wellness conversations has grown into a movement—one where employees take ownership of their mental health and support one another with empathy and openness.“Our team has gone from simply talking about mindfulness to creating their own ways of supporting mental health,” Russell noted. “That’s a win. It means the culture is shifting, and everyone’s part of it.”
As we look ahead, Financial Pathways is preparing to expand its employee wellness programming with initiatives like a walking club, yoga sessions, and updated wellness surveys to better understand staff needs. The goal is simple: to keep building a workplace where mental health isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of how we thrive together.
A Commitment Beyond One Month
While National Mental Health Month gives us an opportunity to spotlight this important work, our commitment to employee well-being is year-round. We are grateful to have a local credit union, and sponsor of our S.A.F.E. Space, Allegacy support our on-going work to recognize, reward, and care for our employees.
As Russell puts it, “Work-life balance, mental health, and connection aren’t trends—they’re the future of meaningful work.”
At Financial Pathways, we’re proud to lead with empathy, model vulnerability, and build belonging. Because when our employees are well, our entire community benefits.
