Passing the Baton: Honoring Leadership and Welcoming What’s Next

At Financial Pathways of the Piedmont, Board Leadership transitions are more than a change in titles—they are opportunities to reflect, celebrate, and look forward. As Andy Harding prepares to wrap up his term as Board Chair and Treva Oliphant prepares to step into the role this January, we sat down with both leaders to hear their stories, lessons, and hopes for the future.

Andy Harding: A Season of Service

Andy Harding, who has chaired the Board since 2023, first became involved with Financial Pathways after board members introduced him to the mission. His personal connection deepened when a senior family member nearly fell victim to fraud but was saved by the intervention of a credit counselor.

During his time as Chair, Andy is most proud of helping launch and grow the Financial Health First Responder Awards Luncheon, now entering its fifth year.

“It started as a creative idea, but quickly became a way to recognize those on the front lines—counselors, bankers, and community partners—who are changing lives every day. Seeing it grow and even be picked up by local media has been incredibly rewarding.”

Andy also reflected on how the Board and staff have grown closer through strategic planning and collaboration:

“Nobody is an island on our Board. We’ve built camaraderie and trust, and that makes us stronger and more focused on the mission.”

As he prepares to pass the baton, Andy shared advice for his successor:

“Treva is going to be an excellent Chair. She understands the ripple effect of strengthening the community and is deeply dedicated to financial education. I look forward to seeing her build on the foundation we’ve laid together as a team these past two years.”

Treva Oliphant: Looking Ahead with Purpose

Incoming Chair Treva Oliphant brings nearly 20 years of experience in financial services with Allegacy Federal Credit Union, where she first connected with Financial Pathways. “Early in my career, I saw firsthand the challenges members faced, and the importance of financial literacy,”

Treva’s commitment to this mission comes from experience. She recalls celebrating when a close friend completed a Financial Pathways program. “Seeing her confidence grow was amazing". She recalls taking her friend out to dinner after she finished the program, debt free!

Outside of her professional work, Treva is a devoted NC State sports fan, enjoys reading, puzzles, and time with family. Her faith and church community also keep her grounded.

For Treva, financial wellness is deeply personal:

“It’s being able to lay your head down at night without worry or anxiety about the next bill."

As she looks forward to her tenure as Chair, Treva is most excited about expanding the organization’s reach. She also highlighted present opportunities in the face of economic challenges. Job losses, rising housing costs, and increased community needs make Financial Pathways’ role even more essential:

“We can’t just wait for people to come to us. I want us to meet people where they are, because financial wellness isn’t just for those in crisis. Anyone with a financial goal can benefit from our services.”

The Baton Exchange

Both leaders spoke about the symbolic and literal act of “passing the baton.” For Andy, the legacy is about awareness and momentum.

“I hope the First Responder Awards continue to grow, and that the Board keeps its sense of camaraderie and mission. Awareness of our work is what fuels impact.”

For Treva, it’s about continuing that momentum with bold vision. Her message for the community is simple and heartfelt:

“Look at the services we offer—no matter your financial stage, we may be able to help. If you know someone who could benefit, send them our way. And if you’re looking for an organization to support, consider Financial Pathways. The work we do is so important, and we need everyone’s help to keep it going".

Closing

We are deeply grateful to Andy Harding for his dedication and leadership and excited to welcome Treva Oliphant as she takes on the role of Chair in January. With strong leadership and a committed community, Financial Pathways of the Piedmont is ready for its next chapter.
